Baked French Fries
Description
This Baked French Fries recipe starts with russet potatoes carefully cut into uniform matchsticks about 1/4 inch thick. Soaking the cut potatoes in water for 10-15 minutes removes excess starch, which helps achieve crispiness when baked. After soaking, the fries are drained and dried well to avoid steaming in the oven.
Olive oil coats the potatoes, and seasonings like kosher salt, smoked paprika, and garlic powder add a smoky, savory flavor. Baking at 450°F crisps the fries in a single layer on a greased baking sheet. Flipping halfway through ensures even browning and crisp edges while maintaining a tender interior.
The finished fries have a balance of crunchy exterior and soft centers, accented by the paprika and garlic. A sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley adds color and herbal freshness just before serving. These fries offer a baked alternative to traditional fried French fries, ideal for serving alongside burgers, sandwiches, or as a snack.
Careful drying and even spacing on the pan are key to crispness. Nutrition information may vary by brand and product choices and should be considered approximate.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs russet potato about 2-3 potatoes
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil divided
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- parsley fresh chopped
Instructions
- Scrub the potatoes clean, then cut into matchsticks about 1/4” each. Make sure to keep them as even as possible so that they will cook evenly.
- Fill a large bowl with water and add the potato sticks. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 450ºF. Brush a large baking sheet with about 1/2 tablespoon of the olive oil.
- Drain the water and dry the potatoes as well as possible with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Place the potatoes in a clean bowl. (You can dry out the bowl that you used to soak them in for less dishes!) Drizzle the remaining olive oil over the potatoes. Sprinkle in the salt, paprika, and garlic powder. Toss to coat.
- Transfer the potatoes to the prepared baking sheet, spreading the fries out into a single layer.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the sheet from the oven and carefully flip the fries over. Return to the oven and continue to bake until the fries are golden brown and crispy, about 10-20 more minutes. (The bake time will be more or less depending on the size that they were cut.)
- Remove from the oven and toss in the chopped parsley. Serve hot.
