Baked French Fries Recipe

This baked French fries recipe produces crispy, golden fries by cutting russet potatoes evenly and soaking the sticks in water to remove starch. Tossed with vegetable oil and seasoning, they bake on a rack to allow airflow and even crisping. The method yields fries with a fluffy interior and crisp exterior without frying, making it a practical approach to homemade fries.

Description

The recipe begins by slicing large russet potatoes into uniform sticks about 3/8 inch thick, ensuring consistent cooking. Soaking the potatoes in water for 30 minutes helps to leach out excess starch, which contributes to a crisper finished fry. After draining and drying thoroughly, the fries are tossed with oil, seasoning salt, and black pepper.

Using a baking rack over a foil-lined sheet allows air circulation beneath the fries so they crisp evenly during baking. The fries bake first on the bottom rack, then are flipped and moved to the top rack to brown thoroughly without burning. The result is fries with a tender inside and browned, crunchy exterior.

These baked fries make a practical side or snack, ideal when you want fries with less oil and frying mess. Serve with ketchup, mayonnaise, or your preferred dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 large russet potato
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil
  • seasoning salt
  • black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with foil and top with a cooling rack.
  2. Cut each potato, lengthwise, into 3/8 inch slices. Then cut the slices into 3/8 inch thick sticks. (Using a french fry cutter makes this step easy and fast.)
  3. Place the cut potatoes in a bowl and cover with water. Allow them to soak for 30 minutes. This will release excess starches and make a fluffy fry. Drain water and pat the sticks dry.
  4. Add the sticks to a gallon Ziploc , along with olive oil, salt and pepper. Shake until the potatoes are evenly coasted. Spread the potato sticks in single layer on the rack set on the baking sheet.
  5. Place the baking sheet on the bottom rack. Bake for 20 minutes. Flip the fries and move the baking sheet to the top rack. Bake for another 10-15 minutes or until golden and crisp.
