Baked French Toast Casserole
Description
Baked French Toast Casserole begins with day-old challah, brioche, or French bread cut into bite-sized cubes. These cubes absorb a custard made from eggs, whole milk, brown sugar, and vanilla extract. The soaked bread is placed in a baking dish, and spoonfuls of sweetened cream cheese are dotted on top, adding creamy pockets throughout the casserole.
A brown sugar streusel made from brown sugar, flour, cold butter, and cinnamon is crumbled over the top to provide a textured, sweet crust after baking. The casserole is covered with foil during the initial baking to allow the custard to set, then baked uncovered to brown and crisp the topping.
Ideal for serving warm with maple syrup or fresh fruit, this casserole serves as a hearty and comforting breakfast dish. Using day-old bread ensures the cubes do not become overly soggy and hold the custard well.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf challah bread 14-16 ounces, or brioche or french bread
- 6 large egg
- 2 cups milk whole
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Sweet Cream Cheese:
- 4-8 ounces cream cheese (softened, use 4-8 ounces depending on preference)
- 1-2 Tablespoons powdered sugar
Brown Sugar Streusel Topping:
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup flour
- 4 Tablespoons butter cut into small pieces, cold
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Start with your favorite type of bread -- challah, brioche, or french bread. Cut it into bite-size pieces. It is best to use day-old bread since it is drier and will be sturdy enough to hold up to the custard. Place in a 9 x 13 baking dish.
- Make a custard by whisking together eggs, whole milk, brown sugar, and vanilla in a medium-size bowl. Pour custard over the bread.
Sweet Cream Cheese Filling:
- In a small bowl, stir together softened cream cheese and powdered sugar. Drop dollops of cream cheese on top of the french toast.
Brown Sugar Streusel Topping:
- In a small bowl, stir together brown sugar, flour, and cold butter. If you want to add a touch of spice, add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Crumble over the top of the bread.
- Cover the baking dish with foil for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the french toast is set. Serve with real maple syrup and fresh fruit.
