Baked French Toast Sticks
Description
Baked French Toast Sticks combine familiar breakfast staples such as eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla with thick slices of Texas Toast bread cut into sticks. After dipping the bread strips into the well-mixed egg and milk batter, they are arranged close together on a baking sheet and brushed with melted butter. A cinnamon sugar mixture is sprinkled on top before baking at 350°F. Halfway through baking, the sticks are flipped, buttered again, and given another sprinkle of cinnamon sugar to promote an even golden crispness. The texture achieves a crisp outside with a moist, tender center.
These sticks can be served warm, enhanced with a dusting of powdered sugar and maple syrup drizzle. Their shape makes them convenient for dipping or eating by hand, ideal for a casual breakfast or brunch. Baking instead of frying provides a less oily version while maintaining the flavors and textures typical of French toast.
To enhance the cinnamon flavor, be sure to evenly brush melted butter on both sides before baking. This recipe is designed for 8 slices of Texas Toast cut into three sticks each. The finished sticks fit closely together on the baking sheet for baking but still retain a crisp texture after flipping. Maple syrup complements the sweet cinnamon topping, but serving it on the side allows for individual preference.
Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup milk whole
- 4 egg large
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 salt pinch
- 8 lices Texas Toast bread
- 2 Tbsp butter , melted, plus more for serving if desired
- maple syrup , for serving
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 18 by 13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper. In a small bowl whisk together sugar and cinnamon, set aside.
- In a medium mixing bowl, vigorously whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla and salt until very well blended. Cut each slice of bread into even three strips (you can layer a few slices to cut several at a time). Dip each portion (I usually dip 2 sticks at a time) into egg mixture then lift and let excess run off and transfer to prepared baking sheet (they will have to fit closely together but leave just a little space between them).
- Using a basting brush, brush tops of french toast sticks lightly with 1 Tbsp of the melted butter. Sprinkle tops evenly with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Bake in preheated oven for 13 minutes. Remove from oven, flip french toast sticks to opposite side and brush tops lightly with remaining 1 Tbsp melted butter and sprinkle evenly with remaining cinnamon sugar mixture. Return to oven and continue to bake until cooked through, about 13 - 18 minutes longer. Let cool for a few minutes. Brush lightly with a little more melted butter if desired and serve warm with maple syrup for dipping.
Notes
- The cinnamon sugar mixture adds sweetness and a slight crunch; be sure to brush melted butter evenly before sprinkling.
- Cutting Texas Toast into sticks before dipping helps them cook evenly and is convenient for serving as finger food.
- Serve warm with maple syrup and optionally dusted with powdered sugar for added sweetness.
- Baking them on parchment prevents sticking and helps with easy cleanup.
