Baked Ham and Cheese Sliders
Description
This recipe starts by slicing dinner rolls horizontally and preparing a butter topping combining melted butter with prepared mustard, dried minced onion, poppy seeds, and Worcestershire sauce. The topping is brushed evenly onto both the cut sides of the rolls. The bottom half is layered with slices of ham and Swiss cheese before replacing the top halves to form sandwiches.
Covered with foil, the sliders bake at 325°F for 15-20 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt and the butter mixture to soak into the bread. The butter mixture adds moisture and a tangy, slightly sweet flavor from the mustard and Worcestershire components. The poppy seeds contribute a subtle crunch and aroma.
These sliders can be served warm for parties, family meals, or as appetizers. They work well alongside simple sides or as finger food. Using different types of rolls, mustards, or cheese can customize the flavors while maintaining the soft, melty texture that defines this dish.
Salted butter is recommended, but unsalted butter can be used with added salt. Hawaiian sweet rolls are a popular choice but regular dinner rolls suffice. The topping blend can be adjusted with the addition of brown sugar for sweetness if desired.
Ingredients
- 12 dinner rolls
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
- 1 tablespoon onion dried minced
- 1/2 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 9 ounces ham sliced
- 6 ounces swiss cheese sliced
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325 F.
- Slice your rolls in half horizontally.
- In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter.
- Whisk in the onion, mustard, poppy seeds, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Brush the butter mixture evenly over both the top (outside) and bottom half of the rolls.
- Layer the ham and Swiss slices over the bottom half of the rolls.
- Replace the top half of the rolls, and cover with foil.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes, or until cheese is melted.
- Remove from oven, and serve warm.
Notes
- Hawaiian sweet rolls are preferred for a slightly sweet bread flavor; regular dinner rolls can be used as well.
- Use salted butter for the topping; if using unsalted, add a pinch of salt to the mixture.
- Various mustards work in the topping—yellow, Dijon, or horseradish mustard all add distinct flavors.
- Slices of white cheddar or sharp cheddar cheese can replace Swiss if desired; thin slicing helps with even melting.
- The butter mixture can be melted in a microwave-safe bowl or saucepan; melt gently without overheating.
- Optionally add 1 teaspoon brown sugar to the butter topping for a touch of sweetness.
