Baked Onion Rings

Baked Onion Rings are made by coating thick-cut onion slices in seasoned flour, egg wash, and panko breadcrumbs, then baking at high temperature until golden and crisp. This method offers a less oily alternative to frying while delivering a crunchy texture and flavorful coating. Serving with dipping sauces adds customizable flavor contrast.

Description

This recipe uses a large yellow onion sliced into thick rings, which are separated and soaked in water to help mild the onion sharpness. The rings are sequentially dredged in a seasoned flour mixture including seasoning salt and chili powder, dipped in an egg and water wash, then coated with panko breadcrumbs for a crispy crust.

They are placed on a foil-lined baking sheet sprayed with nonstick spray, and optionally sprayed on top for added crispness. Baking at 450°F for 10-15 minutes crisps the breadcrumbs without the need for frying. The resulting onion rings combine tender onion centers with a crunchy, seasoned exterior.

These baked onion rings are served with varied dipping sauces, enhancing the eating experience and allowing personal flavor preferences. They provide a homemade alternative to fried onion rings with less oil.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 egg
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • cooking spray nonstick
  • Dipping Sauce of choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray heavily with nonstick spray.
  2. Peel off the outermost layer from the onion and discard. Cut off the ends (sparing as much of the onion as possible) and slice the rest of the onion into thick rings. Separate the rings and place in a bowl of water.
  3. Place panko crumbs in a medium bowl. In a second bowl, stir flour, seasoning salt, and chili powder. In a third bowl whisk together eggs and water.
  4. Take one onion ring and toss it in the flour, being sure to coat well. Next, dip it in the egg mixture, being sure to coat all side. Lastly, Toss the ring in the panko crumbs to coat. Place on prepared baking sheet. Repeat process with remaining rings.
  5. Spray the rings with nonstick spray (optional, but it helps to get them crispy) Bake rings for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and serve with your favorite dipping sauces. (ketchup, bbq sauce, sweet chili sauce, etc. My favorite is 1/4 cup mayo + 1/4 cup ketchup + 1 teaspoons sriracha sauce!)

Notes

  • Pair baked onion rings with your favorite dips such as ketchup, ranch, or a mixture of equal parts barbecue sauce and mayonnaise.
