Baked Potato Recipe

This baked potato recipe uses medium russet potatoes rubbed with olive oil and salt for a crisp skin and soft interior. You can bake them in the oven at 425°F for about 45-55 minutes until tender or use the microwave for a quicker version by microwaving a pricked potato for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally. The resulting potatoes are ideal for adding common toppings such as butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, and chives to customize the flavor.

Description

The Baked Potato Recipe focuses on baking medium russet potatoes until their skin crisps and the inside becomes soft and fluffy. The potatoes are scrubbed clean, pricked multiple times to allow even cooking, then rubbed with olive oil and salt to enhance the skin texture and flavor before baking on a foil-lined sheet. Baking at 425 degrees Fahrenheit allows the potatoes to cook through thoroughly, typically in 45 to 55 minutes. Alternatively, the microwave method speeds this process by cooking a single pricked potato on high for 10 minutes, flipping it occasionally for evenness.

The cooking methods provide tender interior potatoes with a flexible base to be topped with ingredients like butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, salt, pepper, and chives. This versatility makes it suitable for a side dish or a simple meal. Testing doneness is done by inserting a fork or knife to check that it slides in easily. After cooking, allowing the potato to cool slightly before serving improves handling and texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 medium russet potato
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt to taste

Instructions

Oven Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Scrub medium-sized potatoes under cold water and dry with kitchen towels.
  2. Prick with a fork or sharp knife 3-4 times. (Prick down far enough into the center of the potato for even cooking times.) Rub with olive oil and salt. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet.
  3. Bake 45-55 minutes or until soft. (Test with a fork or knife; it should slide in easily.) Cool slightly before serving with any desired toppings: butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, salt, pepper, chives, etc..

Microwave Directions:

  1. Scrub one medium-sized potato under cold water and dry with a kitchen towel. Prick with a fork or sharp knife 3-4 times, down to the center of the potato.
  2. Microwave on high power for 10 minutes, pausing to flip potato every few minutes for an even 'bake'. Potato is done when it can be pricked with a knife or fork easily.
  3. Cool slightly before serving with any desired toppings: butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, salt, pepper, chives, etc..
