Baked Ravioli
Description
This Baked Ravioli recipe assembles frozen cheese-filled ravioli in a baking dish with marinara sauce and shredded mozzarella. The ravioli are layered twice with sauce and cheese, and sprinkled with Parmesan for added flavor and browning. Covered with foil during initial baking, the dish is then uncovered to develop a golden bubbly top and melted cheese texture.
The baking process tenderizes the ravioli and heats through the filling while melding flavors of tomato sauce and Italian cheeses. Cooling the dish briefly before serving allows the casserole to set, making it easier to dish out portions without falling apart.
It serves well as a main dish accompanied by salad or garlic bread. The recipe can be prepared ahead and frozen unbaked, saving time on future meals. When baking from frozen, extra cooking time may be needed to ensure thorough heating.
Ingredients
- 24 ounce cheese ravioli frozen, package
- 24 ounce marinara sauce about 2 ½ cups, jar
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded, or Italian cheese blend
- ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
- parsley optional garnish, chopped fresh herbs
- basil
- oregano
- thyme
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray a 9-inch by 13-inch baking dish (or two 8-inch dishes) with cooking spray. Pour a very thin layer of marinara sauce into the prepared baking dish to cover bottom (about ½ cup). Arrange half of the frozen ravioli in a single layer over the sauce.
- Top with half of the remaining marinara sauce and half of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers once more, starting with ravioli. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake, uncovered, until hot and bubbly, about 20-25 more minutes. Let the dish stand for about 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley or basil, if desired.
Notes
- This dish can be prepared in advance and frozen unbaked in a freezer-to-oven safe dish for up to 3 months.
- When baking from frozen, add a few extra minutes to the cooking time to ensure it is heated through.
- Allow the baked ravioli to rest for about 10 minutes before serving to firm up.
