Baked Salmon Fillets

This baked salmon recipe uses fillets marinated in a citrusy blend of orange juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, honey, garlic, and toasted sesame oil. The salmon is marinated for up to four hours, then baked and briefly broiled while brushed with reserved marinade for a glazed finish. The result is a tender fish with balanced sweet, savory, and aromatic notes, garnished optionally with green onions.

Description

Baked Salmon Fillets begin by marinating the salmon in a mixture of orange juice, dark brown sugar, soy sauce, fresh grated ginger, honey, minced garlic, and toasted sesame oil. The marinade flavors the salmon, imparting a bright, slightly sweet, and savory profile with subtle warmth from the ginger. After marinating for at least one hour or up to four, the salmon is placed skin-side down on a baking sheet, seasoned lightly with salt and black pepper, and baked at 400°F. The cooking time varies with thickness but generally takes 10 to 12 minutes until the salmon is just cooked through. Brushing the fillets with the reserved marinade and broiling for one to two minutes forms a glossy, flavorful finish without overcooking. The salmon should remain moist and slightly translucent in the center, flaking easily with a fork. Green onion garnish adds a mild fresh note.

This dish pairs well as a main course for a simple dinner and can be enjoyed with rice or vegetables.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 salmon 6 oz each, filets
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • green onions for garnish, optional

Orange Marinade

  • 1 cup orange juice or pineapple juice
  • 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tablespoons soy sauce less sodium
  • 1 tablespoon ginger grate, grated fresh
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon sesame oil toasted

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine all marinade ingredients. Set aside 2 tablespoons of marinade for brushing the salmon. Pour the remaining marinade over the salmon and marinate for at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours.
  2. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  3. Remove the salmon from the marinade and discard the excess marinade. Place the salmon, skin side down, in a baking dish or on a parchemnt paper lined rimmed baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Bake the salmon fillets for 10-12 minutes. Note that cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the salmon fillets. Check the salmon early to ensure it doesn't overcook.
  5. Brush salmon with reserved marinade and move to the top rack of the oven. Broil 1-2 minutes or just until cooked through, do not overcook.
  6. Garnish with green onions if desired.

Notes

  • Adjust cooking time based on the thickness and shape of salmon fillets to avoid overcooking.
  • Salmon is done when slightly translucent in the center and flakes easily with a fork.
  • Reserved marinade brushed on before broiling enhances flavor but do not overcook during broiling.
  • Nutritional estimates account for about 25% of the marinade being absorbed by the fish.
