Baked Spaghetti Pie Recipe

Baked Spaghetti Pie combines cooked spaghetti with a rich Italian meat sauce of ground beef, sausage, onions, garlic, and tomato, mixed with eggs and cream cheese, then baked until firm. The dish is a hearty casserole with a creamy texture and integrated flavors from Italian herbs and cheeses.

Description

This recipe begins by browning ground beef, Italian sausage, onions, and garlic, then simmering these with crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried Italian seasoning, and salt to create a flavorful meat sauce. Meanwhile, the spaghetti is cooked in salted water and drained. Some sauce is set aside, then the remaining sauce is combined with the pasta.

Beaten eggs are then mixed into the pasta and sauce along with cream cheese, helping the pie set and providing creaminess. The mixture is poured into a greased springform or pie pan and pressed down firmly. The dish is baked at 350°F until set and lightly browned.

The baked spaghetti pie serves as a comforting meal combining pasta and Italian flavors in a portable pie form that can be sliced to serve. It makes a satisfying main dish for family dinners.

Freezing is possible by assembling the unbaked pie and tightly wrapping it before freezing. When ready to eat, bake from frozen at 350°F for 50-60 minutes covered with foil, allowing for multiple batches to be made in foil pans. Traditional foil pans may not be large enough.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 ounces spaghetti dried
  • 16 ounces ground beef
  • 8 ounces Italian sausage ground
  • 1 yellow onion peeled and chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes (1 can)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning dried
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 cup Italian cheese blend shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a  9-10 inch springform pan, or a 9-inch deep-dish pie pan. If using a springform pan, wrap the outside in foil to avoid leakage.
  2. Place a large pot of salted water over high heat to boil. In a separate saucepot, add the ground beef, sausage, onions, and garlic. Brown the meat over medium heat for about 5 minutes, breaking into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Once the meat is cooked and the onions have softened, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir and simmer on low.
  3. Once the water is boiling, add the pasta and cook according to the package instructions, usually 6-9 minutes. Drain the cooked pasta.
  4. Separate out 2 cups of meat sauce and set aside. Add the cooked pasta to the remaining pot of meat sauce. Stir well to coat the pasta. Beat the eggs, then stir them into the spaghetti.
  5. Pour the spaghetti into the prepared pan. Press down to pack the pasta in the pan. Cut the cream cheese into thin slices and lay them over top of the pasta. Use a spatula to spread out the cream cheese.
  6. Pour the remaining meat sauce over the top of the pie. Sprinkle shredded cheese over the top. Bake for 25 minutes until the edges are crispy. Cool for at least 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • For freezing, assemble the pie but do not bake; wrap thoroughly in foil before freezing.
  • To cook from frozen, bake at 350°F covered with foil for 50-60 minutes until heated through.
  • If making multiple pies, use 10-inch round or square foil pans, as smaller traditional pie pans may be too small.
