Baked Sweet Potato Chips
Description
This recipe involves slicing medium sweet potatoes thinly without peeling, then tossing them with olive oil and sea salt. Baking at 275°F with a single layer arrangement on a pan and turning every 15 minutes ensures even cooking and prevents burning. The chips develop crisp golden edges while retaining some tenderness, highlighting the sweet potato’s flavor.
The chips are ready when golden and crisp, best served soon after baking to maintain texture. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two and revived by returning them briefly to the oven for regained crispness.
Alternatively, the recipe notes that sweet potato chips can be made using a dehydrator at low temperature for several hours until fully crisp, offering another preparation method without baking.
Ingredients
- 2 sweet potato medium
- ½-1 Tablespoon olive oil
- ¼ teaspoon salt more if needed, sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 275°F.
- Wash sweet potatoes and slice thinly with a mandoline slicer or sharp knife. No need to peel the potatoes.
- Place potato slices in a bowl with oil and sea salt. Start with 1/2 Tablespoon of oil and add more if needed. You want the sweet potato slices lightly coated. Toss to combine until all slices are lightly coated with oil.
- Set slices in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 40-50 minutes, flipping the chips every 15 minutes and watching them carefully as some might start to brown faster than others.
- Chips are done when they're golden in color and crisp.
- These chips are best eaten right away, but they can be stored in an airtight container for 1-2 days. If they get soft, you can pop them back in the oven to crisp up again before serving.
Notes
- If chips soften after storage, re-crisp them in a warm oven before serving.
- Adjust oil quantity to lightly coat slices without making them greasy.
- A dehydrator can also be used to make chips by drying at 125°F for 12-20 hours until crisp.
