Baked Tofu
Description
The recipe starts by pressing diced extra firm tofu to remove moisture, which helps achieve a crispier texture when baked. After pressing, the tofu cubes are tossed with olive oil, cornstarch, and salt, coating them evenly. The cornstarch promotes a golden, crunchy crust during baking.
Baked at 400°F on a single-layer baking sheet, the tofu is turned halfway through to crisp all sides. The baking time is 20 to 25 minutes, depending on cube size, ensuring a browned, firm texture around the edges. This process transforms the naturally soft tofu into a more textured component that can be used in a range of savory dishes.
After baking, the tofu can be served immediately or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Its crispness makes it a versatile addition to salads, stir-fries, or grain bowls where a chewy protein is desired.
Ingredients
- 1 pound tofu packages are normally 14-16 ounces, extra firm
- 1 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Dice the tofu into whatever size cubes you prefer.Place the cubes on clean, lint-free cotton dish towel or on paper towels, place another cloth on top, and set something heavy on it (e.g., a cast iron pan) to press down on the tofu cubes to press some of the water out of them. Let them drain like this for about 20 minutes. In the meantime preheat the oven to 400 F.
- Transfer the tofu cubes to a bowl, drizzle over the olive oil, and toss to coat. Sprinkle half of the cornstarch and salt evenly over the tofu, toss to combine, then repeat with the remaining half of cornstarch and salt. If you're using other seasonings add them now.Spread tofu cubes in a single layer on lined baking sheet so they are not touching each other.Bake for 20-25 minutes (depending on the size of the cubes), carefully flipping the cubes over with a spatula halfway through, until dark golden.Use immediately or store in the fridge in a sealed container where it will keep for up to a week.
