Baked Tortilla Chips

Baked Tortilla Chips are made by brushing corn tortillas with a mixture of olive oil, lime juice, and salt, then cutting them into triangles and baking until crisp and golden. This method allows a crisp chip with balanced salt and subtle citrus brightness, suitable for snacking or dipping. Baking provides a lighter alternative to frying.

Description

These Baked Tortilla Chips start with corn tortillas lightly brushed on both sides with olive oil combined with lime juice and salt. Cutting the tortillas into triangular shapes provides classic chip portions. Baking at 375 degrees results in crisp, golden chips that develop slight browning on the edges while drying out to a pleasant crunch.

The lime juice adds a subtle brightness that enhances the tortilla flavor, and the salt balances the richness from the olive oil. The baking time varies a bit depending on baking sheet color to prevent over- or undercooking. The finished chips can be eaten alone or paired with dips like salsa or guacamole.

After cooling completely, chips can be stored in a sealed bag and will keep fresh for several days at room temperature. If they soften during storage, reheating briefly in a hot oven will restore crispiness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 corn tortillas 5 to 6-inch, yellow or white
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • ½ tsp. salt plus more to taste
  • 1 tsp. lime juice optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Whisk together oil, lime juice and salt in a small bowl. Brush oil mixture over both sides of each tortilla using a pastry brush. Cut each corn tortilla into 4 or 6 triangles using a knife or pizza cutter.
  3. Place tortilla triangles in a single layer on two large baking sheets. It's OK if some of them overlap slightly.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes if using a light baking sheet or 8-11 minutes if using a darker colored baking sheet. You’ll know the tortilla chips are done baking when they are crisp and golden.

Notes

  • Cool the chips completely before storing them in a large airtight bag to preserve crunch, good for 3-4 days at room temperature.
  • If chips lose their crispness after storing, reheat in a 375°F oven for a few minutes to crisp up again.
