Banana Beer Bread
Description
The Banana Beer Bread recipe combines all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt with mashed very ripe bananas and beer to form a thick batter. The wet and dry components are mixed gently, then the batter is transferred to a greased loaf pan and topped with melted butter before baking.
During baking, the beer adds moisture and a subtle yeast flavor, while the bananas contribute sweetness and texture. The spices elevate the flavor complexity, making it different from classic banana bread.
Once baked and cooled, the bread is drizzled with a brown butter vanilla glaze made by browning butter, then mixing it with powdered sugar and vanilla. The glaze adds a rich, slightly nutty sweetness that complements the loaf.
This banana beer bread is best sliced and served as a snack, breakfast bread, or alongside coffee or tea. It is a distinctive alternative to typical quick breads, showcasing the effect of beer in baking.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
- 3 banana mashed, very ripe
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 12 ounces beer of your favorite
- 6 tablespoons butter melted, unsalted
brown butter vanilla glaze
- 3 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon milk if needed
- pinch salt
Instructions
- Note: This is NOT banana bread! This is nothing like your classic banana bread recipe. This is a beer bread, with some bananas in it!
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 9×5 loaf pan with nonstick spray.
- Over a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose, baking powder, cinnamon and the salt. Stir in the mashed bananas. Pour in the beer and stir until a batter forms. It will be thick. Spoon the batter in the greased loaf pan. Pour the melted butter over top. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and set in the middle. Remove the pan from the oven and let cool for about 30 minutes.
- Drizzle with the brown butter vanilla glaze and slice.

- Add the butter to a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk constantly until the butter begins to bubble and as soon as brown bits start to appear in the bottom of the pan, remove it from the heat. This will take about 5 minutes. Add the brown butter to a bowl and whisk in the sugar and vanilla extract. If the mixture is too thick to drizzle, whisk in the milk if needed. Pour over the cake once it has cooled and serve!
Notes
- This recipe yields one 9x5 inch loaf.
- Despite the name, this bread differs significantly from traditional banana bread, mainly due to the use of beer and baking powder instead of chemical leaveners alone.
- The brown butter vanilla glaze adds rich flavor and should be poured over the bread once it cools slightly.
