Banh Mi Meatballs

Banh Mi Meatballs are seasoned pork meatballs cooked in a sweet and tangy sauce combining sweet chili, teriyaki, and fish sauce. This Asian-inspired dish is finished by topping with fresh shredded carrot, cilantro, jalapeño, and optionally mint and pickled red onions. The meatballs become coated with a thickened sauce that balances heat, sweet, and savory notes, making it versatile to serve as a main over rice, in buns like traditional bánh mì sandwiches, or as appetizers.

Description

This recipe features pork meatballs cooked in a cast iron skillet, coated with a sauce mix of sweet chili, low-sodium teriyaki, and fish sauce. The meatballs simmer covered in the sauce until fully heated and the sauce thickens slightly. This process infuses the meatballs with a balance of savory, sweet, and umami flavors complemented by the sticky sauce.

The topping of shredded carrots, chopped cilantro, and thinly sliced jalapeños adds fresh, crunchy textures and vibrant flavor contrasts to the warm, saucy meatballs. Optional mint leaves, pickled red onions, and lime wedges provide further brightness, heat, and acidity to adjust the overall balance before serving.

The dish can be served multiple ways: spooned over rice for a filling entrée; stuffed inside bread buns to mimic classic bánh mì sandwiches; or offered on toothpicks as flavorful appetizers. Its flexibility with meatball size and sauce thickness makes it adaptable depending on occasion or preference.

Use frozen or fresh meatballs, and adjust sauce levels during simmering for desired consistency. Stir occasionally to avoid sticking and evenly coat all meatballs.

Ingredients

  • 24 oz. pork meatballs frozen (beef meatballs would also work well, mini or regular size
  • ½ c. sweet chili sauce purchased or homemade
  • ¼ c. teriyaki sauce low-sodium
  • 1 T. fish sauce
  • 1 c. carrot shredded
  • ¼ c. cilantro chopped
  • ¼ c. jalapeño thinly sliced

optional condiments:

  • ¼ c. mint chopped
  • red onion pickled
  • lime for squeezing fresh juice over the top right before eating, wedges

Instructions

  1. Heat 12" cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add meatballs and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes, turning every minute or so.
  2. In a small bowl, combine sweet chili sauce, teriyaki sauce, and fish sauce. Pour sauce into skillet and toss meatballs to coat. Cover skillet and let meatballs cook for about 10 minutes, until thoroughly warmed and meatballs reach 165° F, stirring every few minutes. If you want to thicken the sauce a bit, uncover skillet and turn up heat to medium-high. Stir regularly until sauce is thickened to your liking.Remove skillet from heat and then scatter carrots, cilantro, and jalapeño over the top. If you like, also sprinkle with fresh mint and serve with pickled red onions and lime wedges.

Serving suggestions:

  1. over rice, as a main entree
  2. tucked inside a bun, like traditional bánh mì
  3. with toothpicks, as an appetizer

Notes

  • Frozen pork meatballs work well for convenience; beef meatballs are a suitable alternative.
  • If a thicker sauce is preferred, uncover the skillet near the end of cooking and stir frequently to reduce the sauce.
  • Serve with pickled red onions and lime wedges to add bright, tangy contrast.
  • Use as a main dish over rice, in buns as sandwiches, or with toothpicks as party appetizers.
