Barbecue Sauce Recipe

This barbecue sauce blends ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, molasses, and spices into a thick, tangy sauce with a balanced sweetness and mild heat. Simmering blends the flavors for a versatile condiment ideal for grilled meats or as a dipping sauce.

Description

The Barbecue Sauce Recipe uses a combination of ketchup and apple cider vinegar as its base, providing a sweet and tangy foundation. Worcestershire sauce, mustard, molasses, and brown sugar add depth and richness, while spices like paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder bring warmth and mild heat.

Simmering the mixture for 15 minutes allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. Adding water as needed adjusts consistency based on intended use. The final sauce has a balanced profile that complements grilled or roasted meats and can be served immediately or chilled to develop deeper flavors.

Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to two weeks to maintain freshness and taste. The recipe is straightforward, relying on common pantry ingredients to create a classic American-style barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 ½ cups ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • water as needed, optional

Instructions

  1. Whisk together all ingredients in a medium sauce pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer, cover and cook 15 minutes stirring occasionally.
  2. As the sauce simmers, feel free to add a few tablespoons of water to thin sauce to desired consistency.
  3. Sauce may be served immediately but if you have some extra time, cover and chill for at least 1 hour for best flavor. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator; it will keep fresh for up to two weeks.
  • Adjust thickness by adding water during simmering to reach desired consistency.
  • Allow chilling for at least one hour to deepen flavors before serving, if time permits.
