Basil Crispy Baked Chicken

Basil Crispy Baked Chicken features chicken thighs marinated in a blend of fresh basil, garlic, avocado oil, rice vinegar, liquid aminos, and an optional touch of maple syrup. Baking the chicken at initially low, then high heats, followed by optional broiling, yields juicy meat with flavorful, crisp skin. The marinade’s herbal and tangy notes enrich the chicken, making it suitable for a main dish accompanied by various side dishes.

Description

This Basil Crispy Baked Chicken recipe uses bone-in chicken thighs that absorb a fresh marinade made from blended basil leaves, garlic, avocado oil, rice vinegar, liquid aminos (a soy sauce alternative), and maple syrup for a hint of sweetness. After marinating for at least an hour, the chicken is baked starting at 350°F, then finished at 425°F to cook through and crisp the skin. For additional crispness, the chicken can be broiled briefly near the end.

The process creates tender chicken with a balance of herbaceous basil flavor, gentle acidity from rice vinegar, and umami from liquid aminos. The maple syrup, if added, introduces subtle caramel notes. Oven baking ensures even cooking and a delightfully crisp skin without frying.

Basil Crispy Baked Chicken pairs well with a variety of sides such as roasted vegetables, rice, or salads, fitting well into a wholesome dinner.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 to 3 lbs chicken thigh or chicken of choice, bone-in
  • 3 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 3 Tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 Tbsp liquid aminos or coconut aminos
  • 1 cup basil leaves
  • 1 garlic large clove
  • 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup optional
  • 1/4 tsp salt sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add the ingredients for the marinade to a small blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Place the raw chicken pieces in a zip lock bag (or glass tupperware container) and pour in all of the marinade. Seal the bag and slosh it around until all of the chicken is submerged in marinade. Refrigerate at least 1 hour (up to 10) for best results.
  3. When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  4. Transfer the chicken along with the marinade to a casserole dish. Bake on the center rack of the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 425 degrees F and bake another 10 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and skin is nice and crispy.
  5. For crispier skin, place oven on the high broil setting and move the chicken to the second-to-the-top shelf. Broil for 3 to 5 minutes, until skin is nice and crispy.
  6. Serve with your favorite side dishes and enjoy!
