Basmati Rice (simple method, fluffy rice!)

Fluffy Basmati Rice is achieved through a careful cooking method that uses a precise water-to-rice ratio and controlled heat to prevent stickiness. This simple preparation does not require pre-soaking, and it results in light, separate grains ideal for serving alongside various dishes. The process ensures tender rice with minimal effort and reliable results.

Description

The recipe titled "Basmati Rice (simple method, fluffy rice!)" uses just basmati rice and cold tap water cooked in a saucepan without a lid until simmering, then covered with a tight lid and cooked on low heat for 12 minutes. The method emphasizes not lifting the lid during cooking to ensure all water is absorbed properly. After cooking, the rice is allowed to rest with the lid on before fluffing with a fork to separate the grains.

This cooking technique produces rice that is tender and fluffy without being mushy or gummy. Attention to water measurement and heat settings is important; for larger quantities, cooking times are adjusted slightly. The recipe notes also highlight common issues such as burning, overflowing, or uneven cooking and provide troubleshooting guidance.

Basmati rice prepared this way serves well as a base for many meals where light, separate grains complement dishes like curries, grilled meats, or sautéed vegetables. Its simple ingredients and straightforward steps suit everyday cooking where consistent fluffy rice is desired.

Practical tips include adjusting water if rinsing store-bought rice from bulk markets, choosing appropriate pot size according to quantity, and managing heat to avoid burning or overflow. The resting period after cooking enhances the final texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup basmati rice Note 1, uncooked
  • 1 1/2 cups water (just cold tap water)

Instructions

  1. Place rice and water in a medium size saucepan over medium high heat, no lid.
  2. Bring to a simmer - the edges should be bubbling, the middle should be rippling, the surface will be foaming.
  3. Place a tight fitting lid on, then turn heat down to medium low (low for strong stoves).
  4. Cook for 12 minutes - DO NOT LIFT LID.
  5. Tilt saucepan, then take a QUICK peek to ensure all water is absorbed - be super quick, then clamp lid back on.
  6. Remove from heat, leave for 5 to 10 minutes with lid on, then fluff with fork and marvel at fluffy rice!
  7. Note - Large batches will take slightly longer - about 13 minutes for 2 cups, about 15 minutes for 4 cups (use a pot).

Notes

  • If using basmati rice purchased in bulk rather than bags, rinse the rice by swishing in water multiple times, then reduce cooking water by 2 tablespoons to compensate for absorbed moisture.
  • Use a large enough pot when cooking bigger batches to prevent bottom layer from becoming gummy.
  • Cooking times vary with quantity: 12 minutes per cup, increasing slightly for larger amounts.
  • Ensure lid fits tightly and heat is not too high to prevent water overflow during cooking.
