Battered Cod Fish Tacos

Battered Cod Fish Tacos feature fresh cod fish sliced into strips, coated in a seasoned batter made with flour, baking powder, spices, and root beer, then deep-fried to a golden crisp. Served on warm corn tortillas, the tacos are topped with a tangy cabbage slaw and a fresh avocado salsa, adding texture and brightness that balance the richness of the fried fish. This combination provides a lively and satisfying taco experience.

Description

This recipe creates battered cod fish tacos using fresh cod fillets sliced into uniform strips and dipped in a batter composed of all-purpose flour, baking powder, ground mustard, garlic and onion powders, salt, black pepper, and root beer. The root beer in the batter likely adds a mild sweetness and carbonation to aid in achieving a crispy coating. The fish strips are deep-fried in vegetable oil heated to 350°F until golden brown on each side, resulting in a light and crisp exterior.

The tacos are assembled on corn tortillas and complemented with two fresh toppings: a simple slaw made from shredded green cabbage tossed with red wine vinegar, salt, and pepper, and an avocado salsa blending diced tomatoes, white onion, cilantro, avocado, lime juice, and salt. These fresh elements add acidity, creaminess, and herbaceous notes, enhancing the fried fish's flavor and texture.

This dish balances crunchy, creamy, tangy, and fresh components providing a full range of textures and flavors. It makes a flavorful maleable meal for lunch or dinner that showcases the cod in a casual yet layered preparation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 pound cod fresh
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup root beer
  • 4 Roma tomato diced
  • 1/2 white onion minced
  • 1/4 cilantro chopped, fresh leaves
  • 2 avocado diced
  • 2 lime juiced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups green cabbage shredded
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 16 corn tortillas

Instructions

  1. Pour vegetable oil into a large heavy skillet, using enough to cover the bottom with 1/2-1 inch of oil. Heat to 350 degrees.
  2. Meanwhile, slice your fish into 1/2 inch wide strips, 5 inches long. In a medium-size mixing bowl, make your batter by whisking together flour, baking powder, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and root beer. Set aside.
  3. Make your avocado salsa by combining diced tomatoes, onion, cilantro, avocados, lime juice, and salt in a bowl. Toss together to combine.
  4. Make your simple slaw by tossing together shredded cabbage with red wine vinegar. Season generously with salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. Working in batches, dip fish into the prepared batter to coat. Place directly into the 350 degree oil. Fry until deep, golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes per side. Let drain on a paper-towel lined plate.
  6. Serve fried fish hot on a corn tortilla. Top with slaw, avocado salsa, and jalapeno crema.
