BBQ Chicken Drumsticks

BBQ Chicken Drumsticks are cooked first in a simmering sauce made from tomato sauce, sugars, soy sauce, vinegar, and mustard, then grilled briefly to add char and lathered with more sauce. This results in tender meat infused with sweet and tangy flavors, with a lightly charred exterior for texture.

Description

This BBQ Chicken Drumsticks recipe involves simmering chicken drumsticks in a homemade barbecue sauce combining tomato sauce, granulated and brown sugar, low-sodium soy sauce, white vinegar, and mustard. The slow simmer allows the chicken to absorb the sauce’s balance of sweetness, tang, and umami while gently cooking through.

After simmering until just cooked, the drumsticks are removed and then grilled over high heat, where they are basted with the reserved sauce. This grilling adds a smoky, charred crust to the skin, enhancing texture and flavor contrast between the tender interior and the slightly crisp exterior.

The dish pairs well with typical barbecue side dishes and works for gatherings or casual meals. The process emphasizes giving the chicken a thorough basting and even grilling to develop the signature bbq finish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 cup soy sauce low-sodium
  • 2 Tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 12 large chicken drumstick pat dry

Instructions

  1. BBQ Sauce: tomato sauce, sugars, soy sauce, vinegar and mustard to a large pot over medium-high heat. Stir well to combine. Bring mixture to a gentle boil.
  2. Add chicken drumsticks. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for about 20-30 minutes or until chicken is just cooked through. Remove chicken to a plate and ladle some of the sauce into a cup.
  3. Grill: Clean grill and grease the grill grates well with oil. Heat to high heat. Once hot, add chicken drumsticks. (The chicken is cooked at this point, you're just wanting to char the skin). Lather some of the extra BBQ Sauce on the chicken as you grill it, and rotate the chicken drumsticks as each side becomes lightly charred. If your grill is hot enough, this should only take a few minutes!
  4. Serve with your favorite BBQ side dishes.
