BBQ Hot Dogs
Description
BBQ Hot Dogs start by combining a flavorful sauce blending ketchup, BBQ sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, Dijon mustard, and onion powder. This sauce is heated gently to dissolve the sugars and meld the flavors without boiling. Beef hot dogs are then added and cooked slowly in the sauce for about 30 minutes, allowing them to absorb the tangy, slightly sweet coating.
Following the simmer, the hot dogs are briefly grilled on medium-high heat for a couple of minutes per side to develop light grill marks and a hint of smoky char without overcooking. Placing the hot dogs in buns and drizzling additional sauce from the pot finishes the presentation. Toppings can be added according to personal preference, building on the sauce's base.
This preparation suits casual meals and gatherings, offering a tasty twist on hot dogs by infusing them with a rich, saucy layer that complements the beef. The recipe also notes options for cooking in a slow cooker and recommends reliable beef hot dog brands for quality results.
The method provides a balance between moistness from simmering and texture from grilling, blending convenience with a modest grilled flavor enhancement. The sauce uses accessible ingredients often found in home kitchens.
Ingredients
- 8 beef hot dogs we like Nathan's or Hebrew National
- 8 hot dog buns
- your favorite hot dog toppings
For the sauce:
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 Tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Combine sauce ingredients in a large pot. Heat on medium heat and whisk until all the ingredients are combined and the sugar is dissolved. Don't bring to a boil.
- Add hot dogs to the pot. Stir to evenly distribute the sauce.
- Cook on low for about 30 minutes, until the hot dogs are heated through. (don't discard the sauce-- you may want to pour extra over your hot dogs before eating). Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Remove hot dogs from pot and grill on medium-high heat for about 2 minutes or so on each side or until desired doneness (I like mine just to have light grill marks). Place in buns and drizzle bbq sauce from pot over the hot dogs.
- Top with desired toppings.
Notes
- You can cook the hot dogs and sauce in a slow cooker on high for 2 hours after heating the sauce on the stove.
- Grill the hot dogs just long enough to add light grill marks for texture and flavor.
- Nathan's and Hebrew National are suggested hot dog brands for best results.
- Place hot dogs at an angle on the grill grates to create cross-hatch grill marks if desired.
