BBQ Jackfruit
Description
The BBQ Jackfruit recipe starts by draining and manually shredding canned unripe green jackfruit to achieve a pulled texture. Onions and garlic are sautéed until fragrant, serving as the aromatic base. A spice mixture including paprika, brown sugar, chili, onion, garlic powders, sea salt, and cayenne pepper is combined with the jackfruit to infuse smoky, sweet, and mildly spicy notes. After letting the spices meld, barbecue sauce is added and the jackfruit is cooked until heated through and well coated.
The final product mimics pulled meat in both texture and flavor, suitable for assembling into sandwiches with buns and coleslaw as a topping. This vegan preparation offers a meaty mouthfeel without animal products. The dish's highlights are the combination of spices and BBQ sauce with the tender jackfruit, making it a flavorful filling with balanced sweetness, smokiness, and a slight kick from cayenne.
Store-bought BBQ sauces like Primal Kitchen or Annie's work well, but homemade sauces can be used for preferred flavor customization. Pairing the BBQ jackfruit with crunchy coleslaw adds freshness to the sandwich. The recipe is a practical way to enjoy a meatless alternative in a familiar form.
Ingredients
- 1 14 oz green jackfruit unripe; canned in water
- 2 teaspoons olive oil or avocado oil
- ⅓ cup onion chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 Tablespoon paprika
- ½ Tablespoon brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt sea salt
- pinch cayenne pepper
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- burger buns for topping
- coleslaw for topping
Instructions
- Drain jackfruit and break apart pieces by hand until it's shredded and resembles pulled meat.
- Heat a medium/large skillet over medium heat. Add 2 teaspoons of oil. Once hot, add onion and garlic and cook until fragrant, about 5 minutes. Season with a little salt and pepper and stir occasionally so the garlic doesn't burn.
- While onions and garlic are cooking, combine BBQ spices (paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, sea salt and cayenne pepper) in a small bowl.
- Add shredded jackfruit and spices into the skillet. Toss well to combine. Turn heat to low and let jackfruit cook for 1-2 minutes with the spices before adding BBQ sauce. Coat jackfruit in the sauce and cook for another 3-4 minutes, until jackfruit is warm throughout.
- For sandwiches, serve warm on a bun with coleslaw.
Notes
- Use canned young green jackfruit packed in water for best texture.
- Store-bought BBQ sauces such as Primal Kitchen or Annie's pair well with this recipe.
- Manually shredding the jackfruit creates the desired pulled meat-like texture.
- Serve warm on buns with coleslaw for complete sandwiches.
