BBQ Tofu

BBQ Tofu offers baked or grilled cubes or slabs of extra-firm tofu brushed with barbecue sauce for a smoky, charred flavor. Pressing the tofu beforehand removes excess moisture, allowing it to absorb the sauce and achieving a better texture. The cooking methods both yield richly glazed, caramelized tofu pieces.

Description

After pressing tofu to eliminate water, it is cut into cubes or slabs and brushed with BBQ sauce on all sides. For baking, tofu is arranged on parchment-lined baking sheets and cooked at 450°F, flipping and reapplying sauce to develop browning over 25 minutes. For grilling, tofu is similarly brushed and placed on a medium-high grill, turning to create a charred, smoky exterior over a few minutes per side.

The BBQ coating caramelizes, enhancing the tofu’s mild flavor with sweet and tangy notes. This method produces tofu with a satisfying texture and can be served with additional BBQ sauce as desired.

The recipe includes tips on pressing tofu without specialized equipment, encouraging proper preparation for best results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 tofu pressed at least 30 minutes* and cut into cubes or slabs, extra-firm, 14-ounce block
  • BBQ sauce for brushing
  • cooking spray

Instructions

For baked BBQ tofu:

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place the tofu on a plate and brush with BBQ sauce on all sides. Arrange in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes, or until browned around the edges. Flip, brush with more BBQ sauce, and bake for 5 minutes, or until well browned. Serve with more BBQ sauce, if desired.

For grilled BBQ tofu:

  1. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat.
  2. Place the tofu on a plate and brush with BBQ sauce on all sides. If grilling cubes, thread the tofu onto metal or soaked wooden skewers.
  3. Use cooking spray to oil the grill grates well, then place the tofu on the grill. Grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, or until well-charred. Brush with more BBQ sauce and serve.

Notes

  • For pressing tofu without a press, apply weight with household items for at least 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  • Brush tofu generously with BBQ sauce before and during cooking to build layers of flavor and caramelization.
  • Choose baking or grilling depending on your preferred texture and equipment availability.
