BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes

BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes combine ground turkey simmered with onions, bell peppers, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, and spices, creating a saucy, slightly sweet filling. Served on brioche buns with cheddar cheese and extra BBQ sauce, these sandwiches offer a flavorful and moist alternative to traditional sloppy joes. The optional slurry helps thicken the sauce to desired consistency before serving.

Description

This BBQ Turkey Sloppy Joes recipe starts by cooking ground turkey with finely chopped onion and green bell pepper in canola oil, seasoned with salt and black pepper. After the meat is cooked and drained, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, brown sugar (optional), onion and garlic powders, chili powder, and Worcestershire sauce are stirred in. The mixture simmers about 10 minutes to meld flavors. If the sauce is too thin, a cornstarch and water slurry can be added to thicken it further.

The sloppy joe mixture is spooned onto toasted brioche buns, then topped with slices of cheddar cheese and a brush of extra BBQ sauce for added flavor and moisture. The use of ground turkey creates a leaner sandwich filling with a milder taste, balanced by the sweet and smoky BBQ sauce and spices. This preparation yields a saucy but manageable sandwich perfect for casual meals.

This dish is served warm and is suitable for dinner or a hearty lunch. The addition of cheese melts slightly from the heat of the meat mixture, complementing the BBQ flavor. Making the sauce slightly thick ensures it won’t overly soak the bun but remains juicy enough for texture and taste. The recipe does not include making or toasting buns beyond assembly with the meat mixture and cheese.

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper ground
  • 1 can 8 oz tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoons brown sugar optional
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder or smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Slurry: - Optional

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons water

For serving:

  • 6 Brioche buns
  • 6 tablespoons BBQ sauce
