Beef Lettuce Wraps
Description
The Beef Lettuce Wraps start with lean ground beef browned with minced onion, then combined with minced water chestnuts for a crunchy texture. The sauce blends hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, peanut butter, garlic, and ground ginger to build a sweet, salty, nutty, and tangy flavor base that thickens with simmering. The savory beef mixture is spooned onto fresh lettuce leaves which provide a cool and crisp contrast.
These wraps are served individually, making them convenient for hand-held eating. Toppings of sliced green onions and crushed peanuts add fresh and crunchy highlights. This dish works well as a light entree, appetizer, or part of a meal.
Leftovers should be stored with beef mixture and lettuce separate to maintain lettuce crispness and can be refrigerated for 3-4 days. Ground turkey or chicken can substitute the beef, and soy sauce alternatives like tamari or liquid aminos suit soy allergies. For gluten-free, teriyaki sauce works instead of hoisin, and nut butters substitute peanut butter in allergen cases.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion minced, small
- 8- ounce water chestnuts drained and minced, canned
For the Sauce
- 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon peanut butter creamy
- 2 garlic grated, cloves
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
To Serve
- green onions thinly sliced
- peanuts crushed
- butter lettuce or bib lettuce or iceberg lettuce
Instructions
- In a small bowl, add the sauce ingredients, and whisk until well combined.
- Heat the oil on medium heat in a medium size frying pan. Add the ground beef and the onions and cook until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the water chestnuts and the sauce, and simmer on low heat until the sauce thickens, and everything is heated through, about 3-4 minutes.
- Serve on butter lettuce or iceberg lettuce topped with green onions and crushed peanuts, if desired.
Notes
- Store leftovers with beef mixture and lettuce separate in airtight containers; keep refrigerated up to 3-4 days.
- Ground turkey or chicken can be used instead of ground beef if preferred.
- Use tamari or liquid aminos as soy sauce substitutes for soy allergies without altering the dish's flavor much.
- For gluten-free versions, replace hoisin sauce with teriyaki sauce or increase peanut butter as needed.
- Swap peanut butter for other nut or seed butters if allergic to peanuts.
