Beer Bread

Beer Bread combines all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese with beer as the liquid to create a dense, rustic loaf. The dough is mixed, transferred to a butter-coated loaf pan, topped with melted butter, and baked until deeply golden. The cheddar adds savory richness, making this bread a practical and flavorful choice for casual meals or sandwiches.

Description

This beer bread recipe starts by mixing flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and sharp cheddar cheese to introduce structure, leavening, and flavor. Melted butter is used both to grease the loaf pan and to brush on top of the batter before baking. The beer acts as the liquid and provides subtle yeastiness or malt flavor depending on the beer choice. Once combined, the thick batter is spread evenly in the prepared pan, topped with remaining butter, and baked at 375℉ until the crust is a deep golden brown, around 45 to 50 minutes. After cooling slightly, the bread is loosened from the pan and sliced.

The finished loaf has a sturdy crust with a tender crumb inside, accented by melted cheddar that offers a sharp, savory dimension. This bread is convenient to make and pairs well with soups, stews, or simply buttered as a snack. Its simple ingredients and the ease of mixing without yeast proofing make it approachable for casual bakers.

The notes mention optionally substituting Parmesan cheese for cheddar and add that if using unsalted butter, a slight increase in salt to the dough or sprinkled on top before baking can enhance flavor. These adjustments allow tailoring saltiness to taste or dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour $0.30
  • 1 Tbsp sugar $0.06
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder $0.12
  • 2 tsp salt $0.04
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese $0.62, shredded
  • 4 Tbsp butter $1.20, divided
  • 12 oz. beer $0.92, one regular-sized can

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375℉. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and shredded cheese. Mix well.
  2. Melt the butter in a small sauce pot. Use a pastry brush to coat the inside of a 9x5 loaf pan with butter. Set the remaining butter aside.
  3. Add the beer to the flour mixture and stir until a thick batter forms. Transfer the batter to the prepared bread pan, making sure to spread it out evenly inside the bread pan.
  4. Pour the rest of the melted butter on top of the bread dough.
  5. Bake the bread for 45-50 minutes, or until deeply golden brown on top.
  6. Once slightly cool (about 10 minutes), run a butter knife around the inside edge of the pan gently to loosen the edges, and then turn the bread onto a cutting board to slice and serve.

Notes

  • If using unsalted butter, add an extra ¼ teaspoon of salt to the dough or sprinkle on top before baking to improve flavor.
  • Parmesan cheese can be substituted for the sharp cheddar for a different cheese profile.
