Beer Can Chicken

Beer Can Chicken is a whole bird seasoned with a blend of dried herbs and spices, roasted upright with potatoes and carrots surrounding it. This method steams the chicken from the inside, helping it cook evenly while the exterior becomes flavorful and roasted through. The result is moist poultry with crispy skin paired with tender roasted vegetables.

Description

This recipe calls for a 3 to 4-pound whole chicken, patted dry and rubbed thoroughly with a seasoning mix of kosher salt, garlic powder, dried basil, oregano, paprika, ground thyme, and finely ground black pepper. The chicken is placed upright on a roasting rack or a mostly empty beer can in a shallow pan, elevating the bird to allow heat circulation.

Surrounding the chicken in the pan are halved Yukon Gold potatoes and chunked carrots, which roast alongside and absorb flavors from the drippings. The chicken is then roasted at 400°F for approximately 75 to 90 minutes until the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F measured by a meat thermometer, indicating safe doneness.

This cooking method helps render the skin crispy, while the interior remains juicy, aided by the steam released from the can’s liquid. The vegetables become tender and infused with savory juices, making this a complete poultry roast meal. The technique provides an alternative to traditional roasting by promoting even cooking and moisture retention.
