Belgian Waffles

Belgian Waffles are made from a batter that combines sifted flour, baking powder, salt, separated eggs, milk, and neutral cooking oil. The egg whites are beaten to stiff peaks and folded into the batter to create a light, airy texture. Cooked in a waffle iron, these waffles develop a crisp exterior and tender interior, suitable for topping with syrup, fruit, or whipped cream.

Description

This Belgian Waffles recipe starts with dry ingredients—flour, baking powder, and salt—sifted together for even distribution. The eggs are separated, with whites beaten until stiff peaks form, contributing lift and fluffiness.

The yolks are mixed with milk and oil before being combined with the dry ingredients. The beaten whites are then gently folded into the batter to maintain airiness. Cooking in a preheated, greased waffle iron yields waffles with a crisp outside and soft inside.

These waffles can be served plain or with toppings like syrup, powdered sugar, Nutella, jams, or fresh fruit. The recipe notes that cooled waffles freeze well and can be reheated easily, giving flexibility for meal prep. Gluten-free adaptations can be made by substituting the flour.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large egg separated
  • 1 3/4 cups milk or dairy-free milk
  • 1/2 cup neutral cooking oil vegetable, canola, or melted coconut oil, generic cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Separate the egg yolks and whites into two different mixing bowls. (Be careful not to get any yellow egg yolk in with the egg whites or they wont beat to stiff peaks properly). Use a hand mixer to beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Add the milk and oil to the bowl with the egg yolks and mix. Stir in the dry ingredients.
  4. Fold in egg whites, gently being careful not to over-mix.
  5. Cook waffles: Spoon batter into preheated and greased waffle iron and cook according to waffle maker instructions.
  6. Serve with syrup or your favorite toppings, like powdered sugar, nutella, strawberry jam, berries, bananas or whipped cream.
