Best BBQ Sauce Recipe

This Best BBQ Sauce Recipe offers a balanced blend of ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, and spices including smoked paprika and chili powder, delivering a rich and smoky flavor profile. The sauce simmers to meld its ingredients, allowing for adjustment in thickness with water. It makes about 2 1/2 cups and can be used immediately or chilled for deeper flavor. Its well-seasoned, tangy, and slightly sweet taste makes it suitable for grilling or as a condiment storage staple.

Description

The Best BBQ Sauce Recipe combines common pantry ingredients like ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, and a variety of seasonings such as apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and both sweet and smoked paprika. Cooking the sauce by simmering it for 15 minutes allows the flavors to develop and integrate, with the option to thin it with water for preferred consistency. The final sauce carries a thick, rich texture with a balance of sweetness, acidity, and smoky notes, enhanced optionally by liquid smoke and cayenne pepper for heat.

This sauce is versatile to complement grilled meats, sandwiches, and as a dip. Chilling overnight enhances the harmony of spices and deepens the flavor complexity. It should be stored in a sealed container in the fridge and will keep well for 2-3 weeks, making it convenient for batch preparation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup (I use and recommend one without high fructose corn syrup)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons molasses
  • 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard prepared
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke (optional but recommended)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
  • water as needed for thinning

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients in a medium saucepan and stir together. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes. If you prefer the sauce thinner, stir in a little water. If you prefer it thicker, let it simmer a little longer. Let the sauce cool completely before storing in the fridge. This BBQ sauce can be eaten right away but for best results let it chill overnight to allow time for the flavors to meld.Store it in the fridge in sealed non-reactive container where it will keep for 2-3 weeks.Makes about 2 1/2 cups.
