Best Cranberry Sauce

This cranberry sauce uses fresh cranberries cooked with sugar, fresh orange juice and zest, and a cinnamon stick until the berries burst and the mixture thickens. The sauce balances tart and sweet flavors with citrus brightness and warm spice, making it a classic accompaniment for holiday meals and roasts.

Description

Best Cranberry Sauce combines fresh cranberries with sugar and the juice and zest of one orange to add natural sweetness and citrus notes. Cooking the ingredients together with a cinnamon stick over medium heat causes the cranberries to soften and burst, releasing their characteristic tartness and thickening the sauce. The cinnamon adds a subtle warm spice without overpowering.

The sauce’s vibrant color and glossy texture make it visually appealing alongside savory dishes such as turkey or pork. Its consistency is thick but spoonable, providing a fruity and tangy contrast that complements richer main courses.

The recipe is straightforward, requiring just a brief cook time and chilling before serving to allow flavors to meld. Blending orange zest and cinnamon adds depth beyond plain cranberry sauce variations.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 12 ounces cranberries fresh
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 orange juice and zest from orange
  • cinnamon stick

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, cook cranberries, sugar, orange juice, and orange zest over medium heat. Add cinnamon stick. One orange squeezed is about 1/4 cup of juice.
  2. Bring to a boil, stirring often.
  3. Let cook for 8-10 minutes or until cranberries began to burst and soften.
  4. Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat and carefully remove cinnamon stick.
  5. Transfer sauce to a serving bowl, cover, and chill.

Notes

  • One medium orange yields roughly 4 tablespoons of juice; quarter cup orange juice can substitute if needed.
  • If unavailable, ground cinnamon (1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon) can replace the cinnamon stick for spice flavor.
