Best Green Bean Casserole
Description
Best Green Bean Casserole brings together green beans—fresh blanched or canned—with a creamy mixture of condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, chicken or vegetable broth, finely diced onion, minced garlic, and a blend of thyme, paprika, and black pepper. Cheddar cheese is incorporated into the sauce along with a portion of French fried onions, adding both flavor and crunch. The casserole is placed in a sprayed baking dish and topped with additional shredded cheddar and more French fried onions for a browned, crispy topping.
The homemade French fried onions used in this recipe involve thinly sliced onions soaked in milk or buttermilk, coated in a seasoned flour mixture including garlic powder and red pepper powder, then fried in vegetable oil for a fresh, crispy topping. The casserole bakes at 350°F until heated through and the topping is golden brown.
This dish works well as a classic vegetable side for holiday meals, dinners, or comfort food occasions. The creamy savory sauce balances the tender green beans, while the crispy fried onions provide texture contrast. It pairs nicely with roasted or grilled meats and can be prepared ahead for convenience.

- If using fresh green beans, wash them and trim the ends.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil, season with just a sprinkle of salt, and cook fresh green beans in the boiling water for 5-6 minutes, until green beans start to change color to deep green and become slightly tender. Stir occasionally.
- Drain green beans and immediately place them under cold water. Drain cold water and set green beans aside.
- Add cream of mushroom soup to a large bowl. Add milk and chicken broth and stir to combine.
- Add finely diced onion, garlic, thyme, paprika, and ground black pepper. Stir to combine.
- Add the green beans, cheddar cheese, and 1 cup of French fried onions to the bowl.
- Stir well to combine, and add the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
- Level the top with a spatula.
