Best Mai Tai Cocktail Recipe

The Best Mai Tai Cocktail Recipe combines aged pot still rum with fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, orgeat syrup, and simple syrup, shaken over ice to blend tropical and citrus flavors. Garnished with mint, lime, pineapple, or maraschino cherries, this drink balances sweetness, tartness, and nuttiness. The preparation calls for shaking all ingredients with ice, then serving in a tiki or lowball glass to emphasize its refreshing island character.

Description

This Mai Tai recipe features aged pot still rum, which provides depth and character. Fresh lime juice adds bright acidity while Cointreau or orange curaçao brings a citrusy sweetness. Orgeat syrup contributes a subtle almond flavor and creamy texture, complemented by simple syrup's balanced sweetness. The cocktail is vigorously shaken with ice to chill and dilute slightly, then poured with ice into the serving glass.

Traditional garnishes include mint sprigs and lime wedges, while pineapple chunks and maraschino cherries can be added for visual appeal and complementary fruity notes. The drink’s layered flavors marry tart, sweet, and nutty elements harmoniously, making it a tropical classic.

The recipe includes an optional Mexican variation substituting aged rum with reposado tequila and incorporating citrus salt to rim the glass, which adds a salty and zesty dimension enhancing the drink's overall balance.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ounces aged pot still rum (or blended rum)
  • 3/4 ounce lime juice fresh
  • 3/4 ounce Cointreau (or orange curacao)
  • 1/3 ounce simple syrup 2:1 sugar to water ratio, rich
  • 1/4 ounce orgeat syrup
  • mint for garnish
  • lime
  • pineapple
  • maraschino cherries

Instructions

  1. Fill a shaker with 8 ounces ice. Add all the ingredients. Cover and shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
  2. Pour all the contents (including the ice) into a tiki mug or low ball glass. Mint and lime are the classic Mai Tai garnishes. However, pineapple and cherries are great when serving in tiki mugs.

Notes

  • The Mexican Mai Tai variation uses reposado tequila and orange curacao, served in a glass rimmed with citrus-infused salt for a zesty twist.
  • To make citrus salt, mix finely grated orange and lime zest with salt and let it rest to release oils before rimming glasses.
