Best Marinated Feta Recipe
Description
The marinated feta begins with cutting a block of feta cheese into cubes to maintain texture during marination. These cubes are combined with aromatic ingredients including peeled garlic, fresh tarragon sprigs, whole peppercorns, Aleppo pepper flakes, oregano, lemon peel, and black cumin. The mixture is fully submerged in olive oil inside a jar, which preserves the cheese and allows flavors to develop over 8 to 24 hours.
This process mellows the sharp saltiness of feta and adds bright, herbal, and mildly spicy flavors, making the cheese more versatile. The olive oil also separates out for later use as dressing or marinade base. Marinated feta is commonly served at room temperature as part of Mediterranean-style spreads alongside tomatoes, cucumbers, pita bread, and chips.
Storing the jar in the fridge keeps it fresh for up to one month, as long as the feta remains covered with oil. Bringing the jar to room temperature before serving softens the cheese, enhancing its creamy texture and flavor release.
Ingredients
- 8 oz feta cheese in brine
- 2 cloves garlic peeled
- 2 prings tarragon fresh
- 1 tsp peppercorn
- 1 tsp Aleppo pepper or chili pepper flakes
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 lemon peel only
- 1 1/2 tsp black cumin
- 1 cup olive oil
Instructions
- Slice the creamy feta cheese into cubes. Place them in a clean and dry mason jar.
- Add the garlic slices, tarragon, peppercorn, Aleppo pepper, lemon peels and black sesame seeds.
- Fill the jar with olive oil to the top. Make sure all the feta cubes are submerged in olive oil.
- Seal the jar and marinate the cheese for at least 8 hours up tp 1 day. To serve, take the jar out of the fridge and let it come to room temperature.
Notes
- Use firm block feta rather than crumbled to maintain texture during marination.
- Bring marinated feta to room temperature before serving for optimal flavor and softness.
- Store in the refrigerator submerged in olive oil for up to one month.
- Save leftover olive oil from the jar to use as salad dressing or in other marinades.
- Serve on a mezze platter with fresh vegetables and pita bread for a traditional presentation.
