Best Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Best Mashed Potatoes Recipe features peeled and chunked russet or Yukon Gold potatoes boiled with garlic, then mashed with butter and milk for a creamy, smooth consistency. Optional sour cream adds richness, while seasoning with salt and pepper enhances the savory flavor. These mashed potatoes offer comforting texture and taste, suitable as a versatile side dish.

Description

This recipe boils peeled potato chunks along with garlic cloves in salted water until tender. After draining, the potatoes and garlic are mashed partially before adding butter, milk, salt, and freshly ground black pepper. Mashing continues until the potatoes reach a smooth texture. Sour cream may be folded in for added creaminess and subtle tang.

The result is a rich and velvety mashed potato with gentle garlic notes and balanced seasoning. The creamy texture comes from the butter and milk mixture, and the sour cream enhances moisture and flavor depth.

Mashed potatoes prepared this way pair well with a wide range of main dishes, from roasts to grilled meats, and offer a classic comfort side for many meals.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 pounds potato russet potatoes, Yukon Golds, or a mix, peeled and cut into large chunks
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • ½ cup butter 1 stick, plus more for serving, unsalted
  • 1 cup milk whole
  • teaspoons salt plus more for the cooking water, sea salt
  • black pepper freshly ground
  • ¼ to ½ cup sour cream optional
  • chives for garnish, chopped fresh

Instructions

  1. Place the potatoes and garlic in a large pot and cover with cold water by 1 inch. Season the water with a tablespoon of salt.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and gently boil for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the potatoes and return to the pot.
  3. Begin to mash the potatoes and garlic with a potato masher. When they are partially mashed, add the butter, milk, salt, and several grinds of pepper. Continue mashing until the potatoes reach your desired consistency (we like them totally smooth), then use a spatula or wooden spoon to fold in the sour cream, if using.
  4. Season to taste and serve topped with butter and chives.
