Best Monster Cookies

These monster cookies combine creamy peanut butter, rolled oats, and both chocolate chips and M&M's for a chewy, textured cookie with bursts of chocolate and color. Chilling the dough before baking helps maintain shape and results in soft but structured cookies. The topping of M&M's after baking adds a vibrant, candy-coated finish.

Description

Best Monster Cookies start with creamed softened butter and sugars mixed with peanut butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Rolled oats and flour create the chewy base, while baking soda provides leavening and salt balances sweetness. Chocolate chips and most of the M&M candies are folded into the dough, with some M&M's reserved for pressing on top after baking.

After chilling to firm the dough, scoops are baked until lightly golden around the edges but still soft inside, producing a tender yet textured cookie. The pressed M&M's on top give a colorful appearance and an extra crunch. This method preserves the candy's shape and color during baking.

These cookies satisfy cravings for a rich peanut butter and chocolate combination with the added chew of oats. They make a flavorful treat that holds shape well and can be portioned for sharing or gifting.

The notes mention the flexibility of monster cookie variations, such as adding butterscotch chips, salted caramel chips, or pretzels. This allows personalization according to taste or available ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter softened, unsalted
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter like Jif, creamy
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup M&M's divided, chocolate candies

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and sugar for 4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Add peanut butter, egg, and vanilla and beat for 1 minute longer.
  2. Fold in oats, flour, baking soda, and salt. Stir just until combined. Fold in chocolate chips and 3/4 cup of M&M's, reserving 1/4 cup for after baking.
  3. Cover the dough and chill for 30 minutes.
  4. Once the dough has chilled, preheat oven to 365 degrees. Scoop the dough onto a light colored baking sheet, spacing at least two inches apart.
  5. Bake for 9-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately lightly press the remaining 1/4 cup of M&M's into the tops of the cookies. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before removing.

Notes

  • You can customize monster cookies by adding butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, salted caramel chips, or pretzels.
  • Chilling the dough before baking helps maintain cookie shape and texture.
  • Press reserved M&M's onto cookies right after baking to preserve color and crunch.
