BEST Slow Cooker Ham

This slow cooker ham recipe uses a bone-in spiral-cut ham coated with a brown sugar rub and a flavorful orange marmalade glaze mixed with soy sauce, mustard, rice vinegar, and spices. Slow cooking gently heats the ham through, allowing the glaze to infuse the exterior with both sweet and tangy notes accented by Chinese five-spice and a hint of sriracha. The result is tender meat with a glossy, sticky finish enhanced with optional orange zest, suitable for a festive main course or holiday meal.

Description

BEST Slow Cooker Ham features a fully cooked, bone-in spiral ham slow-cooked with a glaze combining brown sugar, orange marmalade, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, rice vinegar, Chinese five-spice, and sriracha. The ham is placed face down in the slow cooker, rubbed with brown sugar, then coated with the glaze mixture halfway through cooking. This method slowly reheats the ham and melds the complex sweet, savory, and mildly spicy glaze flavors into the surface.

After about 3-4 hours on low, the glaze is thickened on the stovetop and brushed on the ham to give a sticky, caramelized coating. This slow cooking preserves moisture and avoids drying out the ham, resulting in tender slices with a balanced orange sweetness and subtle depth from the vinegar and five-spice. The ham pairs well with traditional sides during festive meals.

To ensure proper cooking, a 7-pound bone-in ham fits best in a 6-quart slow cooker. The recipe notes explain using ½ pound boneless or ¾ pound bone-in ham per person for serving size. Leftover ham can be refrigerated up to 5 days or frozen for 2 months. Adjustments to make the glaze keto-friendly include substituting broths and sugar alternatives.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 7 pound ham fully cooked, bone-in spiral-cut, fully cooked
  • ½ cup orange juice , divided. You may use pineapple juice instead. To make it KETO, use chicken broth though.
  • ½ cup brown sugar To make this brown sugar glaze for ham KETO, use Swerve Brown Sugar Substitute.
  • 1 ¼ cups orange marmalade To make it KETO, use a sugar-free marmalade instead.
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce Use a gluten-free soy sauce for a gluten-free recipe!
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha hot chili sauce
  • orange zest optional

Instructions

  1. Place the ham face down in the crockpot. Pour ¼ cup of the orange juice over the ham. Rub ham with brown sugar.
  2. Prepare an easy ham glaze recipe: Mix the glaze (¼ cup orange juice, marmalade, mustard, soy sauce, vinegar, spice, and sriracha) and pour over the ham, reserving about a third.
  3. Cover tightly, and set to cook on low for about 3-4 hours (or 30 minutes per pound). Baste the ham halfway through the cooking time and then again about an hour before the ham is done!
  4. About 10 minutes before the cooking time ends, heat the orange glaze mixture on the stovetop over medium heat until thickened (about 3-5 minutes). Glaze slow cooker spiral ham, sprinkle orange zest on top if desired, and serve!

Notes

  • Estimate serving sizes as ½ pound per person for boneless ham or ¾ pound per person for bone-in ham.
  • A 7-pound bone-in ham fits best in a 6-quart slow cooker; larger hams may need trimming or a bigger cooker.
  • Do not overcook the ham to avoid dryness; cook about 30 minutes per pound on low.
  • Store leftover ham with its juices in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3-5 days or freeze up to 2 months.
  • For a keto version, substitute orange juice with chicken broth, use sugar-free marmalade, and replace brown sugar with sugar-free alternatives.
