Best Stuffing Recipe

This stuffing uses French bread cubes toasted until firm, combined with sautéed bacon, onions, celery, fresh sage, and parsley. A mixture of turkey seasoning, beaten egg, chicken broth, and water binds the ingredients, creating a moist stuffing with herbaceous and savory notes. The bacon adds a rich, smoky flavor that complements the herbs and vegetables. It is baked uncovered until heated through, making it ideal for serving alongside turkey or other poultry.

Description

Best Stuffing Recipe blends toasted French bread cubes with cooked bacon, onions, celery, fresh sage, and parsley. The bread's firm texture after baking at low heat ensures the final stuffing holds together without becoming mushy. The sautéed vegetables mixed with turkey seasoning infuse the dish with traditional poultry flavors. A liquid mixture of chicken broth and beaten egg adds moisture and helps bind the stuffing.

The preparation involves layering the ingredients in a casserole sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Baking uncovered allows the top to dry slightly and develop a gentle crust. This stuffing works well as a side dish for turkey or chicken meals, absorbing pan juices when available to enhance flavor.

If preparing ahead, the stuffing can be covered and refrigerated before baking, allowing flexibility for holiday meals or gatherings. Adjusting the broth or water maintains the desired moistness to suit personal texture preferences.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 oz French bread white or whole wheat, cut into small cubes, loaf
  • 3 lices Bacon minced, center cut
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion (minced)
  • 3 medium celery minced, stalks
  • 10 sage minced, fresh leaves
  • 2/3 cup parsley chopped
  • kosher salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon turkey seasoning or poultry seasoning, Bell's brand
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup water
  • cooking spray

Instructions

  1. If your bread is fresh, preheat the oven and bake the bread cubes on 2 baking sheets at 250°F for about 30 minutes, stirring half way until the bread is completely firm.
  2. Increase the oven to 350°F.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until cooked through, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the butter; when melted add the onions, celery, parsley, sage, Bell's seasoning, salt and pepper and saute on medium low until soft, about 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool a few minutes.
  4. In  a medium bowl, combine chicken broth and egg.
  5. In a large bowl add bread and combine with sauteed vegetables. Add chicken broth and egg mixture and combine well. If stuffing is too dry, add a little more broth or water until you have the right consistency.
  6. Spray a casserole with cooking spray, add stuffing. (If making ahead cover with foil and refrigerate).
  7. If making alongside a turkey, pour some of the pan juices from the cooked turkey over the stuffing. Bake uncovered 40 to 45 minutes, or until golden.
