BEST Sweet and Sour Sauce

This sweet and sour sauce uses canned pineapple juice, brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, and a cornstarch slurry to create a thick, glossy, sweet yet tangy condiment. Optional red food coloring can be added for vibrant appearance. The sauce is boiled and simmered for thickness, then cooled and refrigerated, where it keeps well for weeks.

Description

The BEST Sweet and Sour Sauce recipe starts by combining pineapple juice, packed brown sugar, rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, and salt in a saucepan brought to a boil. A cornstarch slurry is whisked in to thicken the mixture, then simmered briefly until it reaches a glossy, syrupy consistency. The sauce is cooled before storage. An optional addition of red food coloring can give the sauce a traditional red tint often seen in takeout dishes.

This sauce delivers a balanced mix of sweet and tangy flavors with a smooth texture suitable for glazing, dipping, or stir-fry finishes. Choosing canned or bottled pineapple juice is critical since fresh juice contains enzymes that degrade the cornstarch, which would prevent thickening.

Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, the sauce remains good for 2-3 weeks, making it convenient to prepare in advance and use as needed.
