Best Sweet Potato Casserole

This sweet potato casserole blends baked sweet potatoes with butter, sugar, eggs, and spices into a creamy mash topped with a brown sugar streusel. The crunchy streusel is made by combining softened butter, brown sugar, and flour, then baked until golden. The dish balances smooth sweet potato creaminess with a caramelized, crumbly topping, creating a comforting side often served during holiday meals.

Description

The Best Sweet Potato Casserole starts with thoroughly baked sweet potatoes mashed and whipped with melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and half-and-half to produce a rich, creamy filling. This base is spread evenly in a baking dish before being topped with a mixture of softened butter, brown sugar, and flour that forms a coarse streusel topping. The casserole is then baked until warm and the topping is cooked through, offering a chewy and sweet contrast to the smooth filling.

This casserole combines sweet and buttery flavors with hints of cinnamon and vanilla, supporting a tender yet sturdy texture from the luscious mash and crumbly, slightly crisp topping. The slow bake at a moderate temperature ensures even heating without drying the sweet potatoes.

Serving it as a side dish during celebratory meals is common, especially paired with savory mains like roasted meats or poultry. Optional additions to the topping, such as pecans or mini marshmallows, allow for variation in texture and taste.

The casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 48 hours before baking. When reheating leftovers, the dish warms well in both the oven and microwave. Adjust the sugar content if adding sweet toppings like marshmallows to prevent excessive sweetness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs. sweet potato about 5-6 medium
  • 6 Tablespoons butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt (reduce to 1/2 teaspoon if using salted butter)
  • 1/4 cup half-and-half

Brown Sugar Streusel Topping:

  • 3 Tablespoons butter softened, salted
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet and pierce holes in the sweet potatoes with a fork. Bake for about 50 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the sweet potatoes. Once the sweet potatoes are completely soft and you can easily pierce a fork or knife through them, then they are done baking.
  2. Cut the sweet potatoes in half and scoop out the sweet potatoes to mash them. Place in a large mixing bowl and add melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and half-n-half. Whip the sweet potatoes until creamy.
  3. Place in a 9 x 13 baking dish (or you may go a little smaller) and spread evenly.

Brown Sugar Topping:

  1. In small bowl, mix together softened butter, brown sugar, and flour until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle all over the sweet potatoes.
  2. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are warm and the streusel has cooked through. You may cover with foil halfway through baking time if the streusel becomes too brown.
  3. Serve warm or cover and place in the refrigerator for several days.

Notes

  • Prepare the sweet potato mash up to 2 days in advance and store covered in the refrigerator.
  • For added texture, mix in pecans to the streusel topping before baking.
  • Incorporate mini marshmallows on top if desired; reduce sugar in the mash accordingly.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 4-5 days and reheat in the oven or microwave.
