BEST Tartar Sauce Recipe

The BEST Tartar Sauce Recipe is a creamy condiment made from mayonnaise, crème fraîche, and finely chopped pickles, capers, shallots, and herbs. Balanced with lemon juice and Dijon mustard, it delivers a bright, tangy, and lightly savory flavor perfect for seafood dishes. Chilling the sauce allows the flavors to blend and deepen over time.

Description

This tartar sauce combines mayonnaise and crème fraîche (or sour cream) to create a rich and creamy base. Finely chopped dill pickles, capers, shallot, and garlic add textured bursts of tang and mild sharpness. Fresh parsley or dill lends herbal freshness, while lemon juice and Dijon mustard provide acidity and mild heat. Onion powder, black pepper, and optional hot sauce, olives, or horseradish contribute subtle background notes.

The mixture is stirred together and chilled for at least two hours or overnight, allowing the ingredients to meld and the flavors to mellow. The result is a well-balanced sauce with a creamy texture and a complex savory tang that complements fried or grilled seafood, sandwiches, or as a dip.

Its straightforward preparation and adaptable ingredients make this tartar sauce a dependable accompaniment for a variety of dishes that benefit from a bright, creamy contrast.
