Big Mac Sloppy Joes
Description
Ground beef is cooked with diced onion and garlic until fully browned, then seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and cracked black pepper to build savory depth. The signature "Mac sauce" is prepared by mixing mayonnaise, ketchup, dill relish, white vinegar, onion powder, and smoked paprika, creating a creamy, tangy condiment with smoky notes.
Half the Mac sauce is combined into the meat mixture to moisten and flavor it further. Sesame seed buns are assembled by layering shredded iceberg lettuce and a slice of American cheese on the bottom half, topping with the sauced meat, additional Mac sauce, and pickles, then finishing with the top bun. This creates a layered sandwich reminiscent of a Big Mac but simplified without the middle bun layer.
These Sloppy Joes are served hot as a casual meal. The leftover sauce stores well in the refrigerator and can also be used as a dip for fries or other snacks. A three-bun version can be made by adding an extra bun slice if desired.
Ingredients
For the meat mixture:
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef lean
- ½ medium onion finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper cracked
For the Mac sauce:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup dill relish
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar distilled
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
For the sandwiches:
- 6 sesame seed buns see notes
- 1 cup iceberg lettuce shredded
- 4 lices American cheese
- 12 dill pickles chips
Instructions
To make the meat mixture:
- Add the ground beef, onion, and garlic to a skillet over medium heat. Cook, stirring often to break up the meat, until meat has cooked through. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
- Season the mixture with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Remove from the heat.
To make the Mac sauce:
- Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and stir well to combine.
To make the sandwiches:
- Stir 1/2 cup of Mac sauce into the meat mixture to combine.
- Place ¼ cup of shredded lettuce on the bottom half of each bun. Top with a slice of cheese.
- Spoon the meat mixture over the top of the cheese.
- Drizzle a spoonful of Mac sauce over the meat on each sandwich, to taste.
- Top each sandwich with 3 pickles and the top bun.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- The classic Big Mac sandwich has three bun layers; this recipe omits the middle bun but you can include it using two bottom and one top bun pieces per sandwich.
- Store leftover Mac sauce covered in the refrigerator for up to one week; it works well as a dip.
