Bircher Muesli Overnight Oats
Description
This recipe starts by combining rolled oats with a liquid mixture of orange juice, milk, honey, Greek yogurt, and vanilla extract. The oats soak overnight in the refrigerator, softening and absorbing the liquids into a creamy base. Just before serving, whipped heavy cream is folded in to add richness and lightness, and grated or diced apple is stirred through to contribute freshness and a slight crunch. The muesli can be sweetened further with brown sugar and topped with an assortment of berries, nuts, dried fruit, or fresh fruit according to preference.
The dish balances a mild citrus tang from the orange juice with creamy dairy elements and natural sweetness from honey and fruit. Textural contrasts come from the soft soaked oats, fluffy cream, crisp apple pieces, and crunchy nuts. It can be prepared in advance and stored covered for up to five days, making it convenient for multiple meals.
Using higher protein milk like Fairlife can increase nutritional content. A variety of nuts, seeds, fresh, and dried fruits provide customization options. The oats will soften progressively over storage, so earlier consumption results in a firmer texture.
