Biscuit Mix Recipe (Homemade Bisquick)
Description
This homemade biscuit mix blends dry ingredients—flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar—sifted together to ensure even distribution. Cold butter is cut into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs, which adds fat that promotes flakiness in baked biscuits and similar items. This preparation allows the mix to work similarly to commercial biscuit mixes.
Because it contains butter, the mix provides a richer flavor compared to versions made with shortening, though shortening can be used as a substitute depending on preference. The mix can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one month, making it a handy ingredient for baking biscuits or as a base for other quick breads and pastries.
For gluten-free adaptations, gluten-free flours and appropriate leavening agents should be used to maintain texture and rise. This biscuit mix serves as a practical homemade option for biscuit baking enthusiasts who want to control ingredients and freshness.
