Biscuits and Gravy Casserole
Description
This casserole starts by browning 99% lean ground turkey on the stovetop until fully cooked and broken into small pieces. Meanwhile, country gravy mix designed for sausage flavor is prepared according to package instructions, either in the microwave or on the stove.
The cooked turkey is spread evenly in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, then the gravy is poured over and stirred lightly to distribute. Buttermilk biscuits from a refrigerated can are cut into quarters and layered on top to cover the mixture.
Baking at 350°F for 25 minutes cooks the biscuits through while allowing the tops to turn golden. The result is a layered casserole where soft biscuit pieces absorb gravy flavor and mix with the seasoned turkey, creating a hearty and filling dish.
This casserole can be adapted for gluten-free diets by substituting gluten-free gravy mix and making biscuits from a gluten-free baking mix. It serves well for brunch, breakfast-for-dinner, or a casual entrée requiring minimal preparation.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lb. ground turkey raw, 99% lean
- 1 .2-oz. buttermilk biscuits Grands homestyle, 5 count, can
- 2 .64-oz. country gravy mix sausage flavor, 148g, packs
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9x13” baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
For the Turkey:
- In a large skillet, add the ground turkey. Cook on medium heat until no longer pink, breaking into smaller pieces with a wooden spoon as you go.
For the Country Gravy:
- Meanwhile, prepare the country gravy according to package directions. I used the microwave but you can do stovetop if you prefer.
Assembly:
- Add the cooked ground turkey to the bottom of the baking dish. Then pour the country gravy over top. Stir around some so that the turkey and gravy are dispersed evenly. Cut each biscuit into four pieces and layer the pieces on top of the turkey and gravy mixture.
- Bake for 25 minutes, or until the tops of biscuits are golden brown.
Notes
- To make gluten-free, use a gluten-free gravy mix and prepare biscuits from a gluten-free baking mix formed into small dough balls.
- Layer biscuit pieces evenly over the turkey and gravy mixture to ensure consistent baking.
- This casserole balances lean ground turkey and rich gravy baked with comforting biscuit topping.
