Bisquick Quiche
Description
The Bisquick Quiche recipe combines crisp bacon and tender onions with a custard mixture made from eggs, milk, and Bisquick baking mix instead of a traditional pastry crust. This substitution yields a soft, moist base that contrasts the savory filling well, topped with melted cheddar cheese that adds richness and a slightly sharp note. Baking in a pie dish until the center is set ensures a firm yet creamy texture. The thyme contributes a mild herbal aroma without overpowering the other flavors, enhancing the overall savory profile. This quiche works well warm, ideal for brunch or a casual dinner, and can be easily customized with different fillings or cheeses if desired.
The recipe involves cooking bacon until crisp, then sautéing onions in the reserved bacon grease to capture their flavor. The mixture is combined with the egg and milk batter that includes Bisquick for structure, then poured into a prepared dish, topped with cheese, and baked until set.
Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for a few days and enjoyed cold or warmed. The recipe allows flexibility in milk choice and cheese type, and additional vegetables or meats can be added to suit personal taste.
Ingredients
- ½ pound Bacon diced
- 1 small onion diced
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup Bisquick baking mix
- 6 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon thyme or fresh minced, dried
- 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese shredded
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and coat a 9-inch (23-cm) pie dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy.
- Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain, reserving 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet. Discard any excess grease.
- Add the diced onions to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease and sauté for about 3 minutes until tender. Remove the skillet from heat and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the milk, baking mix, eggs, salt, pepper, and thyme and whisk until well combined.
- Add the cooked bacon and onion to the prepared pie dish and then pour the egg mixture into the pie plate and sprinkle the top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Bake the quiche for 40-45 minutes, or until the center is set and no longer wiggles when you shake the dish.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days to maintain freshness.
- Using freshly shredded cheese results in better melting, though pre-shredded cheese is an acceptable convenience.
- You can add other meats like breakfast sausage, ham, or rotisserie chicken to vary flavor and texture.
- Incorporate diced vegetables such as bell peppers, spinach, broccoli, or mushrooms for extra nutrition and taste.
- Swap cheddar with mozzarella, feta, goat cheese, or pepper jack depending on your preference.
- Any type of milk can be used, including whole, reduced-fat, or non-dairy alternatives like almond, soy, or oat milk.
