Blackberry Bourbon Smash

The Blackberry Bourbon Smash combines muddled fresh or frozen blackberries and mint with bourbon, lime juice, sugar, and a splash of club soda or ginger ale for a refreshing and textured cocktail. The crushed ice chills the drink, enhancing the fruity and herbal notes while balancing the bourbon’s warmth. This drink suits summertime or casual gatherings, offering a visually appealing mix with whole blackberries and mint sprigs as garnish.

Description

Blackberry Bourbon Smash blends fresh or frozen blackberries and fresh mint with a touch of granulated sugar and lime juice, all muddled together to release bright flavors and aromas. Bourbon adds a rich depth while crushed ice cools the drink. The addition of club soda or ginger ale creates a lightly effervescent finish, softening the bourbon's intensity. The muddling breaks down the berries while leaving some intact for texture and visual appeal.

Served in a rocks glass and stirred gently, this cocktail fits warm weather or relaxed settings. It pairs well with light appetizers or summer meals and makes use of seasonal berries and fresh mint. The mix of sweet, tart, and herbal notes complements bourbon's oaky character.

For larger groups, the recipe can be scaled in a pitcher: muddle blackberries, mint, lime juice, and sugar at the bottom, then mix in bourbon, club soda, and ice until well chilled. Using simple syrup rather than granulated sugar helps integrate sweetness evenly. Whole blackberries can be reserved for garnish to enhance presentation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup blackberries fresh or frozen
  • 4 prigs mint fresh
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • lime juice about 1 tbsp, juice of one lime
  • 2 ounces bourbon or whiskey of choice, Kentucky
  • ice crushed
  • club soda or Ginger Ale

Instructions

  1. In the bottom of your rocks glass (or a cocktail shaker), use a cocktail muddler to muddle the blackberries, mint, sugar, and lime juice together to dissolve the sugar, release the oils from the mint, and break up the blackberries.
  2. Add the bourbon, crushed ice, and club soda to fill the glass. Gently stir with a spoon and serve cold.

Notes

  • Prepare this cocktail by muddling ingredients well to balance sweetness and acidity.
  • To make a pitcher, double quantities and muddle fruit and herbs first, then add liquids and ice.
  • Simple syrup can be substituted for granulated sugar for smoother integration.
  • Use fresh mint and whole blackberries as garnish for an appealing presentation.
