Blackcurrant Syrup
Description
The syrup is created by cooking equal parts water, blackcurrants, and sugar over medium-low heat until boiling, then simmering for 10 minutes. This extracts flavor and dissolves the sugar to produce a syrupy liquid. Once cooled slightly, the mixture is carefully strained through a sieve to remove the solids, leaving a smooth, richly colored syrup.
The syrup can be cooled completely and poured into sanitized bottles or jars for storage in the refrigerator. Proper sanitation of containers helps extend its shelf life, which can be up to two weeks. This syrup is useful for sweetening beverages, drizzling over desserts, or incorporating into recipes needing berry flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water 240ml
- 1 cup blackcurrants 225g
- 1 cup sugar 200g
Instructions
- Add the water, blackcurrants and sugar to a pot over a medium/low heat and stir.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove from the heat and cool slightly.
- Place a sieve over a bowl and carefully pour in the syrup to strain.
- Allow the mixture to cool and pour into a sanitized bottle or jar.
- Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Cool the mixture slightly before straining to make the process easier and safer.
- Use properly sanitized bottles or jars for storing the syrup; dishwasher sterilization works well.
