Blackened Salmon Salad with Air Fried Salmon Bites

This Blackened Salmon Salad features bite-sized salmon pieces seasoned with paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, and spices, cooked in an air fryer for a slightly crisp exterior and tender center. Served atop a spring mix salad with fresh cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion, it is finished with an optional sweet and spicy Bang Bang sauce. The combination delivers smoky, sweet, and savory flavors with fresh vegetable crunch and a creamy, mildly spicy dressing.

Description

The recipe starts with cutting skinless Atlantic salmon into one-inch cubes, coating them with a seasoning mix including paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. The salmon bites are air fried at 400°F, producing a flavorful blackened crust while keeping the interior moist.

The salad base is a mix of spring greens, diced cucumber, halved grape or cherry tomatoes, and finely diced red onion. The optional Bang Bang sauce is a blend of mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, honey, lemon juice, sriracha, and water to desired consistency, adding a tangy and spicy complement to the salmon and vegetables.

This salad can be composed in bowls by layering the salad greens and vegetables, topped with the salmon bites, and drizzled with the Bang Bang sauce. The dish presents a balance of smoky, sweet, and spicy flavors with fresh vegetables for texture contrast.

Preparations such as chopping vegetables, cooking salmon bites, and making dressing can be done ahead and stored separately for up to five days. Alternative cooking methods for the salmon include skillet, oven, or broiler, adjusting times accordingly for similar results.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Salmon Bites:

  • 1 lb. salmon I used skinless, Atlantic salmon, filets
  • 1 Tbsp paprika sweet
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

For the Salad:

  • 8 cups spring mix or lettuce or spinach or green of choice
  • 2 cups cucumber finely diced
  • 1 cup tomatoes grape or cherry, sliced in half
  • 1 cup red onion finely diced
  • red pepper flakes

(optional) Bang Bang Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise light, 120g
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce 60g
  • 1.5 tsp honey
  • 1.5 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp sriracha can add 1-2 tsp more more if you want it spicier
  • 1 Tbsp water (more or less depending on if you want it as a sauce or more like a dressing)

Instructions

Make the Sauce

  1. Whisk together all the ingredients in a bowl or shake in a mason jar. Store in the fridge until ready to use. Dressing will thicken with time; To make it thinner, just shake with a little more water until desired consistency.

Salmon Bites

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F. Whisk the seasoning mix together in a small bowl.
  2. Pat the salmon dry with a paper towel and cut into 1-inch cubes. Add salmon bites to a bowl and spray with cooking spray so all sides are coated. Add the seasoning mix and toss with the salmon bites to evenly coat.
  3. Spray air fryer basket with cooking spray. Add the salmon bites to the air fryer basket in an even layer and cook for 5-7 minutes, tossing halfway through, or until the salmon is no longer pink.

Assemble Salad

  1. Add 1/4 of all the ingredients to four bowls or assemble each bowl at a time. (2 cups lettuce, 1/2 cup diced cucumber, 1/4 cup tomatoes, 1/4 cup diced red onion in each of the four bowls).
  2. Drizzle with bang bang sauce (or dressing of choice), sprinkle with red pepper flakes and enjoy!

Notes

  • Vegetables, salmon bites, and dressing can be prepared and stored separately for up to 5 days in airtight containers.
  • To reheat salmon bites, cook in a skillet for 3-4 minutes or bake at 425°F for about 10 minutes; broiling 3-4 minutes per side also works.
  • The Bang Bang sauce thickens when chilled; thin as needed with water before serving.
