Blood Orange Sangria

Blood Orange Sangria blends fruity Pinot Grigio with brandy, fresh blood orange juice, and a medley of fresh berries and apple pieces. The sangria is lightly carbonated with club soda and is rimmed with a citrus-zested sugar for added brightness. This refreshing, vibrant drink is enhanced by allowing it to rest and chill, melding flavors over time.

Description

The Blood Orange Sangria combines freshly juiced blood oranges with white wine and brandy for a balance of fruity acidity and warming spirit. The addition of strawberries, raspberries, and chopped apple adds varied textures and sweetness. Club soda introduces a crisp effervescence to the drink. Rimming glasses with sugar mixed with blood orange zest brings an extra citrus aroma and a hint of sweetness with each sip. The sangria's flavor develops and mellows when prepared ahead and refrigerated, making it suitable for entertaining or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 blood oranges
  • 2 Pinot Grigio wine 750ML bottles
  • 1 cup club soda
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 12 ounces strawberries sliced
  • 1 pint raspberry
  • 1 apple chopped
  • 1/2 cup sugar for glass rimming

Instructions

  1. Zest one of the blood oranges and combine it with the sugar in a small bowl. Rub the sugar and zest together with your fingers until fragrant. Juice four of the blood oranges (I simply did this by hand), discarding any seeds or pith. Chop the remaining blood oranges into pieces.
  2. In a large pitcher, combine the wine, brandy, blood orange juice, club soda, apples, strawberries, raspberries and blood oranges. Stir well to combine. Place the orange sugar on a plate, then run a lemon, lime or orange slice around the rim of each glass. Dunk each glass in the sugar, coating well. Fill each glass with a few ice cubes, then add some of the fruit from the sangria. Pour the sangria into each glass and serve!
  3. Note: this definitely gets better as it sits, so you can make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge.
