Bloody Mary Bar
Description
This recipe uses Clamato or tomato juice combined with vodka, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, prepared horseradish, celery salt, black pepper, and hot sauce to create a flavorful Bloody Mary base. The ingredients are whisked together and chilled to meld flavors. The cocktail is traditionally served over ice garnished with celery ribs, green olives, pickled garlic, dilly beans, beef sticks, and cubed cheese, which add varied savory tastes and textures.
Alternative garnishes and modifications include vodka-infused beef sticks, additional spices, or substituting tequila or gin for different twists. The mix can be prepared in advance and kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours. It can also be served as a virgin drink without vodka. The bar approach lets guests customize their drinks and garnishes.
Homemade celery salt can be used or store-bought, and the choice of hot sauce is optional depending on preferred heat level.
Ingredients
For the Bloody Mary:
- 48 ounces clamato or tomato juice (6 cups, see note 1)
- 2 cups vodka (see note 2)
- 4 ounces lemon juice (from 3 lemons)
- 1 ounce Worcestershire sauce
- 4 teaspoons horseradish prepared
- 1/4 teaspoon celery salt (see note 3)
- 2 teaspoons black pepper freshly ground
- 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce plus more, to taste (see note 4)
For garnish (see note 5):
- 12 celery ribs
- 1 jar green olives pimento-stuffed
- 36 dilly beans
- 12 garlic pickled cloves
- 12 beef sticks
- kewered cheese cubed
Instructions
- In a large serving pitcher, whisk together Clamato, vodka, lemon juice, Worchestershire sauce, horseradish, celery salt, pepper, and hot sauce. Cover and refrigerate until flavors meld, about 2 hours.
- Stir bloody marys to recombine and serve over ice in chilled collins glasses. Garnish with a stalk of celery and other items as desired.
Notes
- Clamato juice adds umami; tomato juice can be used instead.
- Choose vodka you like; pepper-infused vodka adds heat.
- Make celery salt from celery leaves or use store-bought.
- Adjust hot sauce to taste; Cholula is preferred.
- Classic garnishes include celery, olives, and lemon; adding hearty items like beef sticks and pickled garlic enhances the experience.
- Make the mix at least 2 hours ahead or up to 24 hours before serving for best flavor blending.
- Keep vodka separate to let guests control alcohol content.
- Serve the mix virgin for a non-alcoholic option.
- Experiment with additional garnishes like shrimp, bacon, or hard-boiled eggs.
- Variations include Bloody Maria with tequila or Red Snapper with gin.
